He's still growing in the 13.6- to 14.8-inch and 1.5- to 2.5-pound range, and developing his senses, features and talents!
Your baby might be developing an adorable habit this week: thumb-sucking. While the baby's hands remain clenched most of the day, he/she might unclench and stick out his/her thumb every now and then. If the baby likes the comfort from sucking, it might just be a well-established habit way before a pacifier is ever seen.
Your baby now has distinct sleeping and waking cycles, as well. You may find a pattern; at certain times of the day he's very active, somersaulting and boxing, while at other times, he sleeps. In addition, all five senses are now fully developed.
The network of nerves in your baby's ears is better developed and more sensitive than before. He may now be able to hear both your voice and your partner's as you chat with each other. He's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of his lungs. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when he's born and takes that first gulp of air. And he's continuing to put on baby fat. He now weighs about a pound and two-thirds and measures 14 inches (an English hothouse cucumber) from head to heel.
I decided to take Avery to the doctor with me this morning. I figured I only have so many appointments left and she thinks it's fun to go and I like to be able to spend a little bit of extra time with her. Plus I like to keep her around for comedic relief.
driving to the doctor's office
Avery: There's a school bus.
Me: Oh, yeah? Is it going to the school?
Avery: Yeah...that's why it's called a school bus.
Touche´
pulling into the doctor's office
Avery: My collarbone doesn't hurt anymore.
Me: Yeah.
Avery: So...what are we gonna talk to the doctor about?
I got to drink this before my appointment. It tasted awesome. Only not at all.
I had a quick, routine checkup. I gained 4 pounds in the last month for a total of 18 pounds so far. Afterwards, I went by the lab for a blood draw to check for gestational diabetes. I don't have any reason to think I have GD (I didn't have it with Avery) but it's a routine test, and the doctor will call if I have it, or if I have to be tested again.
The nice phlebotomist(?) gave Avery a pinwheel (I assume for distraction purposes). She thought that was pretty cool.
